A Dentist Tips for Staying Healthy

Patients should visit the dentist at least twice a year for a regular checkup and teeth cleaning. This allows the staff to remove bacteria and plaque that has formed within your mouth, on your teeth, and on your gums. This important step will help to prevent tooth decay and gingivitis from forming in your mouth. In addition to visiting our office, we recommend taking the following steps at home. • Drink water. Staying hydrated is important to your overall health and also to the health of your mouth. The body needs water in order to produce saliva. Saliva is the body’s natural way of removing bacteria from within your mouth and will also help to keep your breath fresher. Drinking water is an important step for your oral health. • Cut out the sugar. When you eat and drink sugary items your teeth and gums are at greater risk. This is because sugar and heat are a breeding ground for bacteria and the bacteria in turn, forms acid which will attack your teeth. If you eat desert or drink a sugary soda, follow it up by brushing your teeth right away. • Brush your teeth after every meal. Most dentist recommend that you brush your teeth twice a day. We suggest that whenever possible you brush your teeth after every meal. This way bacteria have less of a chance of spreading and doing damage. • Use a fluoride toothpaste. Overtime the minerals on your teeth start to break down which makes your teeth weaker. A fluoride toothpaste can redeposit minerals onto your teeth and strengthen them which will help your teeth to fight off cavities. • Floss daily. This is an important step as brushing alone cannot reach the area in between your teeth. Not flossing puts you at risk for tooth decay and gum disease. It can also be a cause of bad breath. • Use mouthwash. Carry antiseptic mouthwash with you and use it while on the go instead of chewing mints. It will kill bacteria, freshen your breath, and keep your teeth healthy. You should use it at least once a day. • Eat a healthy diet. There are certain foods that can help to remineralize your teeth. Lean protein, crunchy vegetables, and nuts are some of them. Substitute non-healthy snacks like chips for these healthy alternatives. • Stop smoking. Smokers are at high risk for all types of oral health problems. Tobacco products place a sticky plaque onto the teeth that is not easily removed. This plaque can lead to tooth decay and gingivitis along with causing stains to form. Staying healthy is important. Over seventy percent of the entire U.S. adult population experiences tooth loss at some point in their life. By practicing good preventative care, you can prevent tooth loss, cavities, and gum disease from forming. These preventative steps will save you time and money so start today.
